WOONSOCKET, Rhode Island (WBZ NewsRadio) — Ask not for whom the bell tolls—it was tolling for nobody for a few weeks at All Saints Parish in Woonsocket.
The church bells are on a timer, and used to chime at noon and 6 p.m. every day, but after Daylight Saving Time ended on November 3, they got thrown off schedule and started ringing at some inopportune times, one neighbor told WBZ NewsRadio's Kim Tunnicliffe.
"One o'clock in the morning, and six o'clock in the morning," she said. "My bedroom window is right across from the church. I'm sure it woke a lot of people up!"
Though one man said it didn't bother him at all.
"As a matter of fact, I kind of like hearing it in the middle of the night," he said.
The Providence Diocese said the bell system was temporarily disabled, because there was nobody at the parish who knew how to re-set the timer.
The church was able to find someone to re-set the timer, and the bells are back to ringing at the right time again.
