WILMINGTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A woman from Tewksbury has been identified as the victim of a fiery car crash that happened on I-93 on Tuesday night.
Troopers responded to the scene of the crash at around 10:30 p.m. on the northbound side of the highway between Exits 38 and 39.
Initially, Massachusetts State Police said a preliminary investigation suggested 43-year-old Kristina Lee was struck and killed while she was on foot in the right travel lane.
Further crash reconstruction suggested that for reasons not yet known, Lee had lost control of her vehicle, hit the guardrail, and was redirected back onto the roadway. During that sequence of events, MSP said it appears Lee was ejected from the car, which continued northbound, unoccupied, until it came to rest in the woods.
Investigators said after she had been ejected onto the road, Lee was then struck by another driver, a 24-year-old Methuen man, who remained at the scene.
After Lee's car had been towed, it was confirmed that her vehicle had caught fire and was fully engulfed in flames, which were extinguished by Wilmington Fire Department.
The crash is still under investigation by State Police.
