BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Vermont man is in custody in Massachusetts, after he allegedly stole a truck, fled from police, drove it across the state line, and attempted to strike a State Trooper who then shot him.
On Friday morning, authorities in Vermont notified Massachusetts State Police that a white male from South Burlington was being sought for an alleged carjacking, and police suspected he had crossed into the Bay State.
At around 9 a.m., an MSP Trooper saw the stolen Ford F-150 truck traveling eastbound on Route 2, heading toward Shelburne Falls, and started pursuing the driver.
Meanwhile, another MSP Trooper near the Buckland-Shelburne line stopped his vehicle on the side of Route 2, and began laying a "tire deflation device" on the road to try and stop the truck.
According to MSP, the suspect vehicle approached the Trooper and "drove at him as he stood on the road." The Trooper fired his gun and struck the suspect in the driver's seat. The pickup truck then hit the cruiser and continued to travel east on Route 2 for several more miles on damaged tires.
The suspect finally stopped on Route 2 in Greenfield, and the driver was taken into custody. He was later identified at 33-year-old Daniel Williams of South Burlington, the same suspect that Vermont police were seeking earlier in the day.
Williams was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield where he was last listed as receiving emergency treatment. No information has been provided on any possible charges.
