SAUGUS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Police in Saugus are investigating after three officers were stabbed Thursday morning after responding to a stolen vehicle call. The incident happened shortly after 7:20 a.m. on Tuttle Street.
At the time, police were investigating a report of a stolen U-Haul.
The suspect, Steven Sossong, of Saugus, is now facing multiple charges ranging from assault and battery on a police officer to attempted murder. He is accused of stabbing the officers after trying to barricade the door with his body.
Ronald Giorgetti is the Assistant Chief of Police in Saugus. He said this is a hit to his department.
"Subsequently there was an altercation, Mr. Sossong had an edged weapon, a knife, assaulted the officers on scene," Giorgetti said. "Three of the officers were stabbed, suffered lacerations from the weapon. Additional officers suffered injuries as a result of the altercation."
A fourth officer was also injured and sent to the hospital as a precaution, as his injuries are not considered life threatening.
Sossong was arraigned in Lynn District Court on Thursday.
The prosecutor said that "officers had a concern for his safety and believed a Section 12 was necessary." That would commit him involuntarily for a mental health evaluation.
All four officers have been release from the hospital, according to WBZ-TV.
