Immigrant License Bill Not About Federal Immigration, State Senator Says

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Massachusetts Major City Chiefs of Police Association has endorsed a bill that would allow undocumented immigrants to get drivers licenses.

The bill cleared a committee-level threshold earlier this week, and would need to get a two-thirds majority in both branches of the state legislature to overcome a veto from Gov. Charlie Baker.

State Sen. Brendan Creighton is a co-sponsor of the bill, and told WBZ NewsRadio's Karyn Regal he's pleased to receive the group's endorsement.

"For most police officers, they want to know who the person is that they're pulling over," he said. "By having everybody able to earn a drivers' license, we make that possible."

said they were pleased to get the endorsement of the Major City Chiefs organization, and hope to get more endorsements from law enforcement.

"At the end of the day, this has nothing to do with any of the issues of federal immigration," he said. "That needs to be solved down in Congress, and I have no faith that they're gonna solve it any time soon. But in Massachusetts, we can take measures joining 15 other states to make our roads safer by requiring everyone to get a road test, a vision test, and to obtain insurance."
