Hingham Shooting Suspect Identified, Talked About 'Suicide By Cop'

HINGHAM, Mass (WBZ NewsRadio) — THe Hingham man who was arrested Saturday after shooting at SWAT team officers has been identified.

37-year-old Pharaoh L. Yahtues surrendered to police at 12:45 p.m. after he barricaded himself inside his apartment on HMS Fitzroy Drive in the Hingham Shipyard.

A police statement said officers were dispatched on Saturday at 6:19 a.m. Police spoke to the suspect through the door of his apartment in an attempt to have him exit the building, but police said he threatened to shoot officers through the walls and made statements about "suicide by cop."

Police also received a call from a man stating he was inside the apartment with the suspect, and he had locked himself in a bedroom, afraid for his life. Nearby apartments were quickly evacuated and Metro-LEC SWAT was called to the scene. SWAT team members were able to use a Fire Department ladder truck to get that man safely out of a 3rd floor window.

According to local officials, Yahutes fired "several shots" at the SWAT team and their armored vehicle, but no one was hit. He also threw an unexploded device on to his patio, but no one was injured.

After several hours speaking with a Crisis Negotiation Team, Yahtues came outside and was arrested without incident.

Following a sweep by Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad, resident were allowed back inside. A search warrant later led police to a semi-automatic handgun hidden inside a ceiling vent in Yahtues' apartment. Police said there had been a temporary warrant issues for his arrest "because the GPS tracking device he had been ordered to wear was cut off."

Yahtues was charged with armed assault to murder, discharging an explosive, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, and possession of a firearm without a licence. There may be additional charges sought.

Yahtues is being held without bail and will be arraigned on Monday, January 27, 2020 at Hingham District Court.
