Patricia Timmons

The New 97.7 Woman Of The Week - Week Of April 22, 2019

Name: Patricia Timmons

From: Mattapan, MA

About Woman Of The Week: Patricia is originally from Roxbury and now resides in Mattapan. She is an innovator and a visionary in the field of education specializing in developing confident youth to reach their fullest potential on their own terms. She designs programs that enable youth to build their confidence and help place their footprint in the world.

Patricia earned her Bachelor of Science in Developmental Psychology from Coppin State University; a Master of Education specializing in Guidance Counseling from Cambridge College; and is currently completing her graduate certificate in Nonprofit Management and Learning and Technology Education at Harvard University (Extension School). She is also a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

As a guidance counselor in the Boston Public school systems, Patricia began to recognize an urgent need for a more fulfilling educational experience in the youth she encountered. She soon realized that she wanted to own a nonprofit to help address this need.

In 2011, Patricia founded Making Opportunities Visualizing Empowerment, Inc. (MOVE, Inc.). She is the Executive Director of MOVE, Inc. and built the curriculum with the intention of developing global leaders for the 21st century. As she was getting the pieces together, Patricia finally launched the program in 2014 at the Elihu Greenwood Leadership Academy and connected with 15 young ladies in grades 4th and 5th grades during class period and after-school program.

Patricia has worked with different communities across Massachusetts to make sure parents understand IEP systems, the youth grasp hold of options in life and that both parents and students receive information on the college process without incurring a financial burden upon graduation. She has spent most of her career in the nonprofit sector focusing on women’s health and high school student’s transition into college and/or career. Volunteering her time with the students at Frederick Doulas High School in Baltimore, Maryland, Patricia knew youth development was part of her mission.

On the other side, Patricia has worked with women and cardiovascular health because she strongly believe women who are mothers need to know about their personal health in order to become a full advocate and supporter for their children. These areas also correlate with MOVE, Inc. ‘s vision, which is to build an ecosystem for the student that consists of family and community. Patricia continues to work tirelessly in these areas because they are parallel to one another in order to ensure success for a young person.

As a married mother of a 7-year-old, she relies on her family and extended family for support. As such, she understands the importance of an extensive community/support network. This understanding drives her passion to guide young men and women as they prepare to make some of the most consequential decisions of their lives.

Patricia consistently mentors adolescents and young adults. She volunteers her time by facilitating workshops on college safety, college preparation, college financial aid, and self-esteem building. When Patricia is not helping youth and families through MOVE, Inc., she works as a Course Administrator/Faculty Assistant at Harvard Kennedy School. At Harvard, she helps students prepare for field lab courses such as Advanced Budgeting & Finance, as well as Applied Statistics. She also sits on the Diversity Committee at the Harvard Kennedy School where she provides strategic input on initiatives designed to promote inclusivity.
